At the time of the 1871 census John, his 3 older brothers & his parents were living at Three Bridges, Worth, Sussex.
By 1881 the family had moved to Alfred Mews, Kensington where his father was a coachman & John had 4 brothers & a sister by this time.
John had moved to Paddington, London by 1891 & was boarding at 58 Lancaster Mews in the household of Jane & Thomas Welsh, a coachman. John was working as a groom.
John married Madoline Alice Allard on August 3rd, 1895 at St Michael & All Angels, Kensington. Madoline was born October 7th, 1869 at Evesham, Worcestershire, the daughter of Elizabeth F & John Cook Allard, a market gardener.
By 1901 John & Madoline were living at 5 West Hampstead Mews, Hampstead & John was a domestic coachman. They had an 11 month old son Cyril John Robert & also with them at the time of the census was John’s younger brother Alfred E Mays (23), also a domestic coachman.
John & Madoline were still living at 5 West Hampstead Mews in 1911 & John was still a coachman. They now had 4 children – Cyril John, Florence Madeline (9), Arthur Joseph (8) & Amelia Rose (4).
In 1922 son Cyril, a chauffeur, married Rosina Ratcliffe in Hampstead, London.
Son Arthur married Emily F V Green in 1932 in Ware, Hertfordshire.
Daughter Amelia married John F Lighton, a commercial traveler, in 1935 in Edmonton.
The 1939 register shows John & Madeline living at 22 Holly Road, Farnborough, Hampshire. John was described as a retired chauffeur & head of the household was Arthur H Allard, a 73 year old retired gardener.
There is a death for Madeline A Mays, aged 96, in July-September 1966 at Barnet, Middlesex.
There is a death for John Mays, born February 22nd 1871, registered at Enfield, Middlesex in April-June 1973. This would mean John lived until 102 years of age!
